Last month, I taught summer school to 7th and 8th graders. I’ve worked at the school for the past two years and am now almost unfazed by pre-teen antics, but my students’ summer energy was unlike anything I’ve seen before: Voices are louder, emotions run higher, and challenging behaviors are often more extreme. At the same time, due to the more informal nature of the summer program, many moments are sillier and my ability to have one on one interactions are more plentiful. I’ve gotten to know my students more closely—many of whom I’ve worked with since they were in 6th grade—which has been incredible. Of the handful of jobs I’ve had in the past, this one is by far the hardest I’ve ever had. It keeps me on my toes and tests my patience every minute. It’s also easily the most rewarding, allowing for unparalleled creativity (and access to office supplies). Most importantly, despite knowing there will be new challenges to face the next day, I am deeply satisfied by the work I'm doing each time I leave the building.
While the summer program is over and I became more adept at delivering instructions and handling challenging behaviors (thank you revolving seating charts, warning systems, and positive reinforcement), one thing I couldn’t figure out was how to stop my feet from aching by the end of the day. Many of my trusty pairs of shoes were simply out of the question because of Seattle’s summer heat wave, so I was on the lookout for a alternative. Fortunately, I found a solution in these navy espadrilles, on sale at my neighborhood shoe store, with real soles (not just raffia!) and comfortable footbeds.
I know summer is coming to a close for many, but I’ve always been a believer in late season (read: sale) purchases. If you’re looking for some pretty summer shoes or are thinking ahead to next year as a replacement for the ones you wore out, here are a few worthy contenders. If you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear! (Just remember to raise your hand:)
