Yesterday I landed in NYC and, after a year apart, I’m pinching myself with excitement to be in the same place as Nicole. (When we went to school together, we were glued at the hip and would get peppered with questions about the whereabouts of our “other half” were we to be spotted alone.) In our typical fashion, Nicole and I spent the morning lounging around her apartment chatting, with me dozing in an out following my red eye flight.
We finally headed out for a walk in the early afternoon, stopping by the wonderful Oslo Coffee and Orwasher’s Bakery for Nicole’s favorite chocolate bread (I give it two thumbs up). Aiming for Shakespeare and Co. Bookstore, we were too busy catching up to realize we’d walked ten blocks too far. Finding ourselves outside Bloomingdale’s, the air conditioning called to us and we gravitated towards the kitchen section to choose our hypothetical China patterns. Nicole scoped out some bedding and I enjoyed a free coffee sample before taking a little catnap on a pretty bed under a skylight!

On our way home, we checked out a little deli. More accurately, Nicole had a glint in her eye and I asked if she needed to take a closer inspection. Lo and behold, this place is the real deal. The owner, a sweet Greek man named James, asked how we’d met and offered us perfectly crunchy baked potato chips hot out of the oven. Chatting for a while with James and his daughter, Danielle, we discussed museums and found out the deli has been open for 96 years! Heading out the door, James gave us two chocolate covered meringues in butcher paper to enjoy on our walk home. It would be fun to go back and pick out a few treats for a picnic in the park.
This city has so many gems to discover and I can’t wait to continue exploring in the next two weeks. (I want to see as many Upright Citizen's Brigade shows as possible.) Tomorrow we’re planning to find the best soup dumplings in Queens and on Sunday we’re hoping to catch a free concert with Bonnie Raitt at Lincoln Center.
Any suggestions of things not to be missed while I’m here? We'll be sure to write an update to our NYC Guide for any places that make the list!
Have a great weekend!
