A few years ago, I had a subscription to The New Yorker. I figured that the magazine would be my one stop shop for all of the best Broadway shows to see, off-beat restaurants to eat at, and free gallery exhibits to wander around once I moved to New York for college later that year. I imagined being up to date on world events and knowledgeable about up and coming writers, not to mention the magazine covers could be weekly dorm decorations, if need be. Little did I know, the Broadway shows were $75+ a ticket, the restaurants had a six month wait list, and I didn’t like the art at the galleries. Worst of all, some weeks I didn’t even crack the cover, and, if I did get past the table of contents, reading more than one article in the same week the issue hit newsstands was worthy of a celebration akin to finishing Les Miserables in French. I’ve never taken French.
This in mind, I was excited to hear about The New Yorker Minute. It's a free weekly email newsletter that tells you which New Yorker articles are worth reading (so that you can slowly recycle that stack currently tall enough to serve as a nightstand).
If you're in the mood for reading, here are two articles I'd recommend:
“The Fate of a Joke in Lebanon” by Elias Muhanna, on artistic censorship
“Flick Chicks” by Mindy Kaling, on brainstorming romantic comedies she’d like to write
Would you try The New Yorker Minute? What magazines do you read?
P.S. If you'd like to have Left Coast Other Left posts sent to your inbox, we send out a weekly digest email on Fridays. Sign up using the form in our right sidebar!
