Another afternoon, we went to the beach on the coast of the Mediterranean, nearly caught hypothermia in the freezing May water, and ate ice cream. I kept hoping I’d spot a classic Breton shirt, the striped shirt of my dreams, but alas, one never emerged.
Yet one day at an outdoor market, while looking for stripes, I stumbled upon a handmade soap stall. Covering the table were bars of every scent imaginable. I ended up with six bars and to this day regret not having filled my whole suitcase with more. They’re even better than Pre de Provence, which I always thought were as good as it gets. These magical soaps had the softest lather, the most delicate fragrance, and held up in the shower. I am irrationally sentimental about them and have only brought myself to use two bars.
Realizing it’s a little crazy to wax poetic about something as simple as a bar of soap (it’s just soap, for crying out loud!), I figured I should find some alternatives that don’t require a trip halfway around the world. Plus, they also make great gifts to liven up a bathroom counter. Here goes:
