Two years ago, I spent a week in the south of France. My bedroom window had a balcony where I sat in the afternoon drinking San Pellegrino, reading The Book Thief, and watching a mama bird flit around the yard feeding her new babies in the nest. It was idyllic, to put it mildly.
Another afternoon, we went to the beach on the coast of the Mediterranean, nearly caught hypothermia in the freezing May water, and ate ice cream. I kept hoping I’d spot a classic Breton shirt, the striped shirt of my dreams, but alas, one never emerged.
Yet one day at an outdoor market, while looking for stripes, I stumbled upon a handmade soap stall. Covering the table were bars of every scent imaginable. I ended up with six bars and to this day regret not having filled my whole suitcase with more. They’re even better than Pre de Provence, which I always thought were as good as it gets. These magical soaps had the softest lather, the most delicate fragrance, and held up in the shower. I am irrationally sentimental about them and have only brought myself to use two bars.
Realizing it’s a little crazy to wax poetic about something as simple as a bar of soap (it’s just soap, for crying out loud!), I figured I should find some alternatives that don’t require a trip halfway around the world. Plus, they also make great gifts to liven up a bathroom counter. Here goes:
