In setting up my first apartment, I've purchased a number of essentials like dishes, a dresser, etc. In doing so, I've looked at neighborhood consignment stores, the local Goodwill, Craigslist, and asked friends if they're looking to get rid of or would be willing to loan some of the items on my list. Buying second hand is certainly better for my budget, but I also enjoy knowing that I'm not buying another one-use IKEA piece that won't last a few years of regular use or, better yet, a move.
Following suit with Nicole's recent post in our Mindful Style series, I've tried to find the most environmentally friendly and ethical option when buying items new.
Call me a grandmother, but I have a soft spot for good table linens. There are so many great patterns and textiles out there to choose from and I'm enjoying the hunt for a set for my apartment. linen hemstitch in white (also in navy, mauve)
screen printed ranunculus (also in green)
simple linen in moss (also in pink, light grey)
stonewashed linen in blush pink (also in light blue, white)
If you're looking for linens, I found all the above options on Etsy, a site where independent designers can sell their work. Where do you go to find linens?
