This summer I discovered the hilarious podcast Mortified. The producers describe it as “a storytelling series where adults share the embarrassing things they created as kids -- diaries, letters, lyrics and beyond -- in front of total strangers.” Don’t get me wrong, I love the New York Times, but sometimes you just need to laugh. One iTunes reviewer aptly wrote that each episode is “unapologetically cringe-worthy.” The best part? Mortified is absolutely free and there’s a new episode available every weekend.
To channel LeVar Burton on Reading Rainbow (my childhood hero): Here are four episodes that you might like. But you don’t have to take my word for it...
Episode 20 - Lizzy: My Semester in South Africa
“Vacuum cleaners, washing machines, hot water, electricity and Taco Time are all things that I expect to receive because I’m alive.” 1990s Johannesburg post-apartheid culture shock, as told from the perspective of a sheltered teen. It’s so bad it’s good. (Listen on SoundCloud or iTunes)
Episode 23 - Retta: The Academic
You loved her as Donna on Parks and Recreation (say it with me: treat yo self), now hear Retta read her high school diary. Nerdy raps for no extra charge. (Listen on SoundCloud or iTunes)
Episode 21 - Mortified’s Summer Camp Spectacular!
Letters from a boy to his parents, begging to be picked up early from summer camp. Extreme ultimatums, a pyromaniac bunkmate, and naked canoeing, oh my! (Listen on SoundCloud or iTunes)
Episode 16 - Brooke: I Was A Teenage Witch
Stories about taking over the high school hallways and why her college covenant just wasn’t cutting it. Also, mom wants that cauldron (er, crock pot) back soon so she can make dinner. (Listen on SoundCloud or iTunes)
Heads up: some episodes are raunchier than others, as the stories were written middle/high school students bubbling with hormones. :)
