Recently, I’ve been conflicted over whether I’d like to have a unique sense of style or adhere to a uniform. Claire and I have discussed our uniform and how much we love certain staples, such as a great pair of black skinny jeans or a striped shirt. I also can’t help but be intrigued with the minimalist wardrobe trend (which you can learn more about here and here). But lately, I realized that almost all of my clothing could be considered staples. For instance, two weeks ago, I went to my cousin’s first communion and wore almost all black. I felt like I was going to a funeral. Granted, I wasn’t the only one who wore dark and neutral colors, reassuring me that the color black is still appropriate for all occasions. Compared to the pink, white, and purple color scheme of the reception, for the first time I felt my uniform had failed me. I was left questioning: What's my style? And how can I implement it?
Luckily, I have gained some inspiration from the short documentary, Iris, on Netflix. Iris Apfel is a style icon who has been rocking the most outrageous outfits for the past 94 years. Learning about her life and how she wound up becoming one of the most recognizable icons in fashion has given me a new appreciation for textile and color. Plus, she has some great insight about life and personal style. While I'm certainly not ready to toss aside my beloved staples, I am ready to incorporate pieces that are a little louder and crazier. I'm beginning to really understand what it means to have your style reflect your personality. While I may seem quiet at first, once you get to know me, there is a sillier and louder side of me, too. Why not reflect that in what I wear?
